1 year of comfort :)

I have been here for 1 year and just renewed my lease without hesitation. The maintenance is always quick and helpful, and the staff has been very kind despite how many questions I asked. I did not tour before I moved in, but was pleasantly surprised with updated appliances and a great space with high ceilings. The area is in walking distance to restaurants and a beautiful neighborhood too. There is always nearby street parking for guests.
The security is also great. I have never once felt...
unsafe, the garage and entry ways are locked by keypad or key fob and the parking garages are very well lit.
Occasionally I hear steps from the apartment above me, but it is nothing that is distracting. I am a student and have yet to be disturbed by noises.
One thing I was nervous about living in Norfolk were bugs. I have only seen 1 cockroach and occasional fruit flies, as opposed to my friends who live in other complexes around the area and have serious roach problems. I tend to leave my doors and windows open, and this was after a rainy day so it was expected.
I have never had a package stolen from the package room, and having access to an amazon hub has been amazing and convenient.
The gym is a little small, but rarely ever crowded with more than 3-5 people. Has great cardio equipment and the basics for weights. I am fairly athletic and it has been sufficient for me.
Overall I highly recommend!!!

Would Not Reccomend

To start things off- I will say the manager, Carlette, is RUDE. She was so sweet & welcoming while we were applying for the apartment then as soon as we signed it was a total 180 by the very next day. I thought maybe it was in my head until some other folks that I know through the military who also live at the Alexander said they had a similar experience.
My roommate went on leave for a week and I received an email from Carlette stating the roommate had left trash in a refuse room at move-in and...
we needed to remove it or charged a disposal fee. The roommate couldn’t remember what she was talking about so I responded to Carlette and asked which Refuse room. The response I received? “I guess whichever room your roommate used ??”. Unprofessional. I responded explaining she was out of state and I could dispose of it but needed to know which refuse room. Never received a response. I walked all of the refuses and never found anything. She is quick to email you about fees on your account or whatever it is she wants, but rarely returns an explanation or responds to emails.
This is the #1 thing about Alexander that left a bad taste in my mouth and the main reason I did not renew.

2nd- Speaking of move-in, at signing we were told we’d have access to a cargo elevator near the parking garage to move furniture. What was not communicated was that it was broken. Imagine rolling up with a full U-Haul and going to the front desk when the elevator won’t recall to the ground floor just to be told by different staff members, “Oh yeah.... it doesn’t work.” I asked how long it had been out of commission. They said weeks. We signed the lease a week prior so, guess we were lied to.

3rd- Your money’s worth. Against other apartments in this area- the amount of $$$ you pay in rent here is a travesty. Other luxury apartments in the area offer extremely competitive rent amenities. Like, new and GORGEOUS apartments with fantastic reviews less than 5 minutes from The Alexander. I felt ripped-off I felt when I started touring other ones at the end of my lease. The apartments are out-dated (but clean! I’ll give them that) and something is always wrong. My toilet runs after you flush it for hours. Reported it to the office staff and it was not fixed once in the six months I was there. This is a pet-friendly complex so the hallways always smell like dog urine on the second floor. The fob-access entrance doors to the building are constantly broken.

Alexander at Ghent

Very well priced of the few similar apartments in the area. Has several courtyards with bbqs and a main courtyard with a pool. Courtyards and the apartment as a whole is very pet friendly. The location is set between two prime nightlife and restaurant areas.

Great for the price (smaller apartments)

I moved into my studio 6 months ago. I pay $970 a month plus $30 for trash. I pay electricity and cable. I get one free parking spot in the garage which is a big reason i chose the alexander at ghent. They also have room for bike storage. You can pay $50 a month for each additional parking spot. The courtyard and pool are very nice. They have gas grills you can use. Only downside to pool is its only 4ft deep. More of a kids pool. Staff is great and the two times ive called maintenance (a/c... broken and sliding door hard to slide) theyve responded fast. Great place.
