Not exactly 'Luxury'

I lived at the Law for close to a year and I was pleased with my stay, though I definitely expected more from the price even for a downtown location.

The apartments themselves are beautiful, have plenty of natural light, great appliances (electric only, no gas), good sound/temp insulation, and great built-in furniture, though the windows are an older model that is apparently not made or maintained any longer, so any that get stuck or have issues tend to be screwed shut permanently, as there's...
no way to replace worn or broken parts. This isn't that big an issue, and it mostly just shows the age of the building and that they're doing their best to renovate it.

The common areas were very pretty to look at, but obviously since the pandemic hit they've been under lock and key. We're presumably still paying for their upkeep through rent, since there hasn't been any form of compensation for the lack of access.

Parking is off-site in one of the City's own parking garages, most likely only across the street from the building. No complaints there, though the contract can leave you restricted to "roof" parking, meaning you'll always have to drive up and down to the highest level.

The mail room is shared with several other buildings, it is unattended and open to any tenant. Not sure how they handle other buildings' tenants entering the Law, whether their keyfobs open both buildings or they are let in manually.

The biggest issues I've had concern security and the staff.
Security-wise, I had a bicycle disappear without a trace from one of the "bike storage areas" (which are just empty space at the bottom of the stairwells, outfitted with bike-racks that hold a fraction of the bikes left there) and when trying to get security camera footage, I was informed the cameras weren't working. My best guess is someone coming in through a gate to the alleyway that's frequently left open, which defeats the point of having "controlled access" at the street-facing doors.

The leasing agents have all been very understanding and eager to answer our concerns, even long after move-in. There is a web-portal and community, but the only time that came into use was to send mass-advertising for a local restaurant (?!?)

Overall I've had a very agreeable stay at The Law, but 'Luxury' might be an overstatement. If you absolutely must rent Downtown, it is a decent option.

Beautiful

Great downtown location near all of the good food spots in Norfolk. I walk to work and I feel safe within my home which is important because I am not from the Norfolk Area. The application process was a breeze

Prospect

Building is gorgeous. Staff takes the building down to a 0, I wouldn’t mind living and paying for luxury things but when it comes to dealing with rude females or staff that’s absolute NO NO. People work and spend their money to live the good life I don’t need to come home to be greeted by rude staff. Make sure you always evaluate staff interaction because you will be the one living and dealing with those people. I refuse to lease from here and encourage others to find somewhere else where they... have better customer service. Thank me later.

Awful

I cannot recommend this apartment building. It has been frustration after frustration just trying to live and work here. The parking garage is one shared with the public and is hence very dirty, crowded, and sometimes downright scary. I pulled in one evening to find a man urinating in a corner. And it definitely smells like urine. The building itself is an old one and while some of the renovating touches are nice and updated, all of that really cannot compensate for old, "historic" windows... that apparently cannot be replaced. This means that a huge amount of construction noise and otherwise general outside noise enters the apartment. In the end, if you can't get a good night's sleep, is it really worth it?

Property Manager at The Law Building responded to this review

Thank you for your review. Our staff welcomes all feedback, both positive and constructive, as it helps us improve our community. We are able to accommodate our residents with parking spaces in a covered, public parking garage located in close... proximity to the building. That being said, the parking garages are controlled and monitored by the City of Norfolk, and should you have any questions or concerns I would suggest reaching out to them directly. The Law Building was built in 1905 and we are proud of the renovations we have done, because we think it is a perfect blend of old and new. While we can never guarantee total silence especially when living in the heart of Downtown Norfolk, we did take measures to control noise. Our community features double-wall construction, accompanied with 9.5 inches of soundproofing between each floor!
